I met a Muralist, an incredible Mural-artiste...What a creative soul!
Her name: Shamina Mehta.
She is of indian origin, lived most of her life in Belgium, went to university in the UK and now calls NYC her home. Anyone with the privilege to have a room painted by her is lucky indeed...
She paints murals for baby's and kids' rooms as well as living rooms, schools and non-profit spaces, theatre sets and anything else you can think of...
Check out her work below as well as excerpts from my interview with her.
What is your
art medium? Why did you choose to express your artistry in this medium? How did
you learn it and get into it?
My favorite art medium is Mixed Media. I choose to express my artistry in this medium because through the use of mixed media I am able to add dimension, depth and texture in my work. This allows me to express my emotion and creativity in the painting. During my adolescent years I experimented with various mediums. I felt that mixed media allowed me to incorporate my strengths from individual mediums.

Why are you
creative?
I am creative because it is an escape from reality for me. Creativity enables me to think outside the box and change the environment that I live in.
I have two sources of inspiration. One comes from travel experiences in India, Africa and other exotic places in the world. Interacting with the local community, especially with the children, allows me to understand the culture. I like to use my artistic skills to capture these precious moments. There is a lot of history and tradition in these countries and through photography and paintings I try to capture the emotion and culture in a still life shot.
Living in New York is a rich source of inspiration. The city is so diverse and dynamic. I feel inspired by my daily routines in New York City as I observe the colors, shapes, and patterns in the most simple of things.
My artwork that I am most proud of is a mural that I painted with under privileged youths at a non-profit organization on the lower east side. The piece brought out the creativity in young people. I bring joy and happiness into their lives and inspire them to continue with their creative talent. Most importantly I gain a rewarding experience from the youth as there is so much to learn from them.
The advice I would give to someone is not to think about the block and to continue with their daily routines because they will be inspired when they least expect it by something that they would have never thought of.
